Optical zoom, by definition, is a function of the lens system and gives "real time" quality. Digital zoom takes place in the camera AFTER the photo has been recorded and results in much less quality. Even many "cheeeeeep" cameras have both, optical, to take the picture and digital, to view the picture after it is taken.
There are three classes of digital cameras, the consumer class, costing around $300 or less, the prosumer class, costing between $500 and $1000 and the professional class costing over $1000.

Only optical zoom counts, digital zoom is worth nothing except for viewing details of a picture you've taken, to see whether you've got to retake it. It should be about 5x. Panasonic has a camera with "only" 5 megapixels, but a 10x optical zoom. I don't know more details, but you should have a look at it. I believe it's called lumix TZ 1.
