Yom Kippur is the Jewish Day of Attonement. This is the day when we fast (no food or water), and pray to god to show mercy on us for the sins we have commited during the previous year. It comes every year seven days after Rosh Hashana (the Jewish New Year) and the hebrew date is the 10th of Tishrei. Traditionally, we wear no leather as a sign of humility, and wear all white to symbolize being reborn for the new year and being clean. We do not believe in our sins being wiped away, but we pray that god should show compassion on us for our transgressions. This holiday is Torah mandated, given to us directly from god himself. It is a Jewish holiday were men over thirteen years old and women over 12 years old fast for a complete day. This is the day that G-d decides your fate for the year. People are in synagogue (Jewish place of worship) almost all day. It is traditional to wear white, so as to emulate an angel's purity. One fasts so that they don't focus on the physical, but rather on the spiritual. Yom Kippur takes place ten days after "rosh hashanah", the Jewish new year.

Yom Kippur is the Jewish Day of atonement. It is 10 days after Rosh HaShanah, which id the Jewish New Year. It is a 25 hour period in which we can not eat, drink, wear leather/lotions/makeup, or enjoy other earthly comforts. Rather, we pray to G-d for forgiveness, and we think about how to improve ourselves for the coming year. It is traditionally when G-d weighs your sins and good deeds against each other and decides your fate for the coming year (although as we say many times on Yom Kippur, charity, repentance, and good deeds can reverse the worst of G-d judgments). It is a very spiritual day, and very difficult, as it a day for serious prayer and introspection.

Yom Kippur is observed throughout the world by all observant Jews. It's a time to repent for sins and to ask God for forgiveness. Most Jews will fast for 24 hours during this time and will also go to Temple for religious services.
