Okay, we've had a major disagreement with food..the best before date means 1) you must eat it before that date or 2) you must cook it before that date and can eat it after..yuck.. I know cows aren't stamped with a magic date but...

It means that the taste , texture , color etc, are maintained best --- till that date only.
You may eat it later on too --- but it [food] might not look or taste as good/great as it would have, if eaten earlier.

Best before date: Usually means it is recommended (advisable)you eat it before the given date.

I would say 'Best Before' would mean eat before that date.
