does anyone know why?

when u graduate generally 2 things:
1) the guest of honour will turn the tail on ur graduation hat from right side to left side, then give u the paper, or vice versa.
2) everyone throws the hat after all have been done with it.

does anyone know?

Customs depend on where you are. Most graduations that involve academic regalia, or a cap and gown, include a moving of the tassell fromright to left. This is sometimes done by the official handing out the diplomas, sometimes the entire class does this in unison. As for throwing hats or caps in the air. This is also customary in some places, like military academies and not so customary in others.

Graduation is to celebrate your achievement...its a chance for all you know to say they're so proud of what you've done!
