Should I buy a cot or a cotbed for my baby? Cotbeds look so big, but are they the best option?

It depends if you are thinking of having any more children after the1st and what gap there will be between them. If you'll have more children, stick with a cot, once your oldest will be 2-3 yrs old he/she can move into a single bed with a bed guard and you'll have the cot free for the next one.
With a cot-bed, I think the child can sleep in there until they are 5 or 6. (My son is 5 and I can't imagine him now sleeping anywhere else than a single)

Cotbeds in the long run are finacially a better option, but its nice to have an actual cot for a new baby.
Cotbeds tend to look more like beds than cots too and as you say are bigger than a cot.
We had triplets and 3 cotbeds so I know what I am talking about.

Good luck..

we bought a cotbed for a few reasons.

1/ we are not planning to have another baby before this one will grow out of the cotbed. If you are planning another then a cot would save you money

2/ babies like to stretch out and sometimes a cot can be too narrow. Our son sleeps with his arms right out!

3/ mammas&papas do a great cotbed with drop sides like a cot and variable matress height.

4/ the room is big enough so we thought it would be silly to get a cot for the same price that baby would have outgrown in a year.

just shop around x

As other people have said, it depends on the size of your room and whether you are likely to have another baby within 2 years or so of the first. One piece of advice though, whether you go for a cot or a cotbed, try to find something with teething rails & end pieces they can't chew! We bought a fairly expensive cotbed for our son but although the sides had teething rails the end sections were at the same height and he made a real mess of them and we are now stuck with the gnawed on ends as a bed as well!

My girl was premature so we werent organised with a cot i opted for a swinging crib at first coz she was so tiny, then it was upgraded to a cot then upgraded to a cotbed... cost a fortune so id say COTBED!! Good luck with your baby.

Definitely cot-bed. My girl is still using her one five years on (okay, I'm about to change it).

A cot will last you fifteen to eighteen months at most.

Yes, they will save on money darlin in the long run. I bought one for my son and he's still in it. We will be converting it very soon to get him used to a proper bed.
