I have always thought that metal (like gold rims on saucers and cups) caused sparking and caused the microwaves to arc back and damage the cyclotron(is that the right word?) but a recent recipe I saw suggested wrapping the thin end of a chicken leg with aluminium foil before cooking in a microwave. I am confused.

yes you can use foil, what is causing the sparks are wrinkles in the foil, flat foil will work fine.

myth busters on the discover channel did a show on it.

I have always been careful of what I have placed into the microwave oven, if they have gold around the edges, and the design has gold etchings, it will cause an arc in the oven. I have always made sure that no silver, or aluminium, went into it, as this also causes it to arc, you can blow the oven up if it short circuit the fuses which give you the microwaves, also be carefull when drying out anything such as herbs, etc as after a while when the moisture has been removed it will cause it to blacken inside.
