Actually a lot of people have jobs long before they complete their formal education. And no, I don't think time spent on getting an education is a waste just because it involves a lot of time.

I guess if you want to flip burgers for the rest of your life, you don't really need to further your education. Personally, I would rather have the person performing my surgery, or flying the plane I'm on, to have a little bit more education.

you forgot college, and college is what you will learn for your job, your major in college is what your job will be about.
