Like jumping and running really erratically. How long is this meant o go on for cos with mine if it has at late afternoon it does this til late night. Is it okay to give the cat this stuff?

I personally dont want a hyper cat but is it wrong of me to try keep a calm cat

It's not suppose to make a cat hyper. Think of it as "weed" for cats. I was told that catnip doesn't affect younger cats. It's not until they're older that they start being affected by it. My cat will eat it, rub his cheeks all over the floor, then his body, and after everything is said and done he just collapses in pleasure. Not any cat of mine has ever gotten hyper over it. They've all ate, rub, and pass out. Of course, it could be just the kitten in him that makes him hyper. It also depends on the breed of cat too. I have a Siamese/Himalayan mix and he has never had the desire to get on counters or jump all over the place (even when he was a kitten). I also had a "heinz 57" cat and she was all over the place. So it could be just the personality of your cat.

I have two cats, one 4 years old and one 5 months. Both of them love catnip when it is rubbed on their toys. They go mad biting the toy and rubbing it on their facial scent glands.

The younger one does go a bit hyper afterwards but is old enough to be controllable.

We dont give it to them very often as they become immune to it so its an occasional treat only.

Your hyper problem is probably more down to the fact that your kitty is only 9 weeks old - at that age they will go hyper several times a day anyway. Maybe reduce the amount of cat nip to start with just in case though!

Your cat will probably grow out of it, but i would suggest only putting out the toys with catnip at a time when it is apropriate. So maybe put those toys away a couple hours before you want to go to bed.
It is not wrong to want a calm cat, but you can't expect the cat to never want to play. Many cats act differently to catnip, but most of her energy is coming from the fact that she is still young. You could also consider only putting those toys out when you arnt home to keep her occupied and find some other toys for when you are home that wont make you crazy.
Good Luck!

You may just have a hyper cat. It being a kitten makes it even more so. SOme cats dont like catnip, some are buzzed for hours, just take the toys away and get some catnip free ones.

Being that the kitty is nine weeks old whether it has cat nip or not, that is the way they act. they are just very playful when their babies. If you have plenty of toys which sounds like you do and things for cats to stimulate them, that will help with them tearing the house down. I had to chuckle with you talking about the kitty jumping and running erratically, i can just picture it. I wouldn't put cat nip on all its toys as your right that is just winding him up more. they don't have to have it, but they do like it, just cut down on the amount and have it be a treat for the kitty. Good luck with your new kitty.

Every cat reacts to catnip differently, my cat didn't react to it at all when it was a kitten, so i just didn't give it him.
Now he is 4 yrs old, when i give it to him, it sends him into an erratic euphoric state, and sometimes he can get a bit over the top and i worry a bit, so i just take it away.

Use it as a treat, not as an every day toy.
Good Luck.

I dont think cats are meant to have cat nip when they are young, but I have also heard the same its like a feline version of crack, having said that my 3 cats dont do anything when given things containing cat nip they don't seem fussed by it, but if you don't like how its acting don't give it stuff with cat nip in !
Good Luck !

some cats react very differently to catnip than others. i have 2 cats, a male about 6, and a girl about 3. he likes catnip, but it makes him sleep. she doesn't care for it at all.

you may want to wait until your kitty is a bit older before exposing it to catnip on a regular basis. maybe another month and a half, or two. let it grow a little more.

the best thing for that is to loan my dog for 5 Min's, this will put a stop to your cats erratic behaviour and wont hinder you again, and the added bonus i save money with not feeding him
