A friend has a potential b/f who we suspect of lying about his past -- a LOT. He claims to have been a Colonel in the US Army; a Secret Service agent on the Clinton Presidential detail; and a major league umpire. Is there a list of Army officers, past and present, that is authoritative? We'd love to catch him in just one lie, irrefutably.

The man in question is 50, so it's possible... but not with the other career paths he claims to have followed!

The easiest way is to ask him about all the great benefits that he receives from the military; in particular ask him if he used his VA loan to buy a house. If he has and you know what county his house is located at, just call the register of deeds of that county and ask them if they have his DD-214 on file. They would have to have if on file for his VA loan to be valid.

There are several ways to find out. I'll try to list the ones I know but look around besides these. Also, Congress (House and Senate) passed this year the Stolen Valor Act of 2005 which penalizes people who distribute fake medals as well as people who falsely claim to be a servicemember.

It is not likely he was both a colonel which requires 15 to 20 years service and to have been a secret service agent!
