Travel to China during the summer months can mean really hot weather and increased throngs of people because school is out. The weather is humid and the air is filled with polluted air so the sky is always gray. During the summer months, it seems like there are more foreigners in Shanghai. The winter can get pretty cold and you don't want to pack all of those heavy clothes. The best time to go would be either the spring or fall. The weather is nice and definitely not so hot. Clear skies can be the perfect back drop to a good picture. In October, there's National day, when China first became the People's Republic. In August, there's the Lunar celebrations. In the Spring, there are also some celebrations in February, including Chinese New Year. These events could bring out a lot of people.

Beijing is my hometown! The best time to Beijing and Shanghai is Spring (April and May) and Autumn (September and October), however early Spring sometimes there is sandstorms in Beijing. Also put in mind, May 1(the Labor Day) and Oct 1(the National Day) both are one week long holiday and everywhere is crowded.

In early to mid - Spring, there is Cherry Blossom Festival in Beijing which is really beautiful! You will witness the Spring wake up this old city from her hibernation!

China is a vast country, with huge variations in climate, so it depends a lot on where exactly you want to go. In general, spring and autumn are the best times, as the weather is better for a wider range of places and you can avoid the extremes of heat and cold. If you do come in winter, visit places like Harbin, where the extreme cold becomes a tourist attraction in itself! July and August can be very trying almost everywhere in China, but may be good times to visit places at higher altitude, like Tibet..

However, I would definitely not go to anywhere in China during the first week of May and the first week of October. These are the 'golden' weeks, when most Chinese people have a holiday, and no matter where you go in China, it will be horrendously crowded - with masses of Chinese tourists taking the opportunity to visit the tourist attractions in their country. Transport of every kind will be extremely expensive and probably fully booked, hotels and restaurants will charge extortionate prices, and wherever you want to go you will spend most of each day in a queue. Outside of these two weeks, you will have a fantastic time in China no matter when you come!

depends on which city

if Beijing, i suggest Autumn - it is golden here - Oct. 1st is the national day of China, and the golden week - so many ppl in Beijing

Shanghai - better not in summer - others are the same for me...

Jan. / Feb. - Chinese New Year - very traditional Chinese festival - enjoy it~

why not come to HK & Macau? here is a good guide - http://www.gomacau.com

you could've gone during october when they had the moon festival, but there's always next year.

springtime is also another good time to go when they have the boat festival and they have these dragon boat races. uber cool. plus there's qing ming jie, which is like day of the dead for chinese people, except all they do is go to their family member's graves, give them some food, and pray to them.

but temperatur wise, fall, spring, and maybe the beginning of summer are the best times to go.

hope you have fun!!! =]

Where are you flying from?. Flying in January or February to China, departing from Los Angeles isn't all that expensive if cost is a factor for you.

Yunnan in southwest China is the best choice whenever you want to go. There are always different places to visit in different seasons.
