Unfortunately, one of the hallmarks of a dry socket is that pain medication does not relieve the pain. It is, however, possible that you need to be taking a different combination of pain medication, too. Don't take MORE of the same medication. You don't want to exchange liver failure for a toothache. Take a DIFFERENT TYPE of pain medication. If ibuprofen isn't working for you, try some Tylenol, then some Aleve. If you really don't have a dry socket (and only a dentist will be able to determine this for you) and you put something into that socket and dislodge the clot, you just gave yourself a dry socket. Call the ER and see if there is a dentist on call. Generally ER's associated with a university will have one, especially if there is a dental school. The main ingredients of dry socket packing vary from dentist to dentist, but generally are dry socket paste (which does have some clove oil in it...not big hunks of cloves...there's a difference!) and Gel Foam (a collagen matrix that a clot can form to). When it is placed, you will want to be numb. Go to a dentist tomorrow or at the ER today to see if it NEEDS to be placed first or you could do more harm than good! I hope this helps. Feel better soon.

Forget about the ER. Call the dentist who did the surgery. He or she should have an answering service with emergency contact information.

Most of the docs I know would come in on a weekend to take care of a dry socket. It should be included in the cost of the surgery.

Call the dentist. This isn't normal and you need to let them know. Dry sockets are so painful too. Poor you. I hope you feel better soon.

I know you can mash up cloves with petroleum jelly for a pseudo dental packing. Not entirely sure how reliable it is.
Call the ER and find out. They may help you or at least point you in the right direction.
Take care.
