After World War I and II, more than a few troops came home with "shell shock" - now known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Some of these soldiers were unable to sleep.
While the short term effects of a lack of sleep are well known - disorientation, failing health, failing mental faculties (i.e. inability to do simple tasks), long term effects are still being studied.
In the case of at least a couple of the soldiers (above), they reportedly never slept. They might have restful waking periods, where they "zone out" for a bit, but they apparently never actually slept.

I've never heard of anybody being able to stay awake that long. I guess it would depend on the person.
