While searching your answer I found this link of people discussing chihuahuas similar to yours. These people are a LIIIIITTLE obsessed (and annoying) but it seems like your dog is just a different looking chihuahua - that's all - still a pure bred but not standard. Personally I heart all dogs, especially mutts, and the people discussing "dear" chihuahuas in this link are bum-faces. But it helps support my answer so here ya go: http://www.faqs.org/qa/qa-20114.html

Every breed has a breed standard, a written description of what the ideal specimen should look like (this is so a Chihuahua does not look like a Miniature Pinscher or a Toy Manchester Terrier, etc.) and so their form follows function: deep chest for lung capacity on a Greyhound, stong jaws on a Doberman Pinscher, etc. That is WHY there are dog shows - to prove good breeding by awarding titles to the best. Reputable breeders then continue passing forward the good genes to future generations.

Unfortunately, too many dogs come from poorly bred specimens, bred by unknowledgeable people without a clue about what or why there IS a breed standard. They breed for: profit, because 'they think ' their dog is cute, to let their kids see the 'miracle of birth', & so on. They unfortunately produce dogs of poor quality that get further & further away from what the breed is supposed to be with each sucessive generation. Some people will say there are different 'types' (i.e. in Chihuahuas: deer & appleheads), but that is just an excuse for bad breeding - there is only one breed standard. They are typically sold by what are refered to as Backyard Breeders (through local classified ads) & Puppy Mills (through pet stores & over internet websites). Once you have paid for the pup, their involvement with that dog's future welfare is typically nonexistant.

To get a well-bred dog, you have to do your research: go to www.akc.org, find your closest local chapter of the Chihuahua club. Buy from a member that tests & certifies their breeding dogs for genetic defects known to the breed (reputable breeders do this, as they are trying to protect & improve the dogs they bring into the world). This is the best way to get a healthy, well bred pet - & that looks like what the breed standard outlines. Plus, good breeders will be happy to answer any questions throughout your pet's life, and will take back any dog if you have a crisis - such as sudden transfer, divorce, etc. They truly care about the welfare of the dogs they bring into the world & the people that own them - for life.

Whether your Chihuahua is purebred or not does not matter. Even the most purebred dog, with bad breeding choices, will come out "wrong" for it's breed standard. No one is calling your dog a mutt for not looking like a Chihuahua should (according to breed standard), only that it does not look like it "should".

Of course, this has nothing to do ith personality or character, so enjoy your little fur-baby! XD My Great Dane is only about 27 inches high, but I couldn't care less that he's a shorty <3

The Chihuahua you have is known as the breed called the Deer Head Chihuahua, the one mostly seen on commercials in the breed known as the Apple Head Chihuahua. I raised both breeds for many years. Hope this helps.

There is only one type of chihuahua, but yes there are some with the "apple head", and some with the more "deer type" head. Even though your chihuahua is pure bred, it probably just wasnt bred from typey parents :)

No, just different bloodlines. Chihuahuas also vary greatly in size, from one pound up to 15 pounds; they're still chihuahuas. Your dog just sounds cuter than most.

there are apple heads and deer heads. Technically, the pure breds are suppose to be apples.. but personally I don't like the look of them. I have a deer head chi..
As long as they are healthy that is all that matters :)
