1. fluids flow better over a round contours (opposed to any other shape)
2. round / cylindrical shapes are the strongest for fluids
3. while manufacturing what the cover sits on (T junction) its more cost effective to stay with the same shape rather than changing to another
4. because people are round they fit easier when going down inside a manhole
