I recommend that you Check for Windows Updates manually. Always pick CUSTOM, so you can READ the updates that are recommended, but avoid the updates that you do not want. Currently, Internet Explorer 7 is among the recommended updates. at this point, you should consider the downside of IE7 before you install that one.

I would go to the Control Panel, and open the Automatic Updates section. I would TURN OFF Automatic Updates.

Then go into the Security section, and CHANGE THE WAY that Microsoft notifies me of security.... Then UNCHECK the notification of Automatic Updates.

Here are some of the things that I do not like about IE7:
1 - Microsoft changed how Internet Explorer looks and works.
2 - Some versions of Quickbooks does not work anymore.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Most windows updates are to fix little problems that they find with programs and security. It is not essential, but a good idea. It does not slow your PC (except maybe when it is installing). If you turn it off, it won't download them automatically, but you can do it manually. Yes you should download the updates!!!

Some of them are essential.
You must not completely ignore your windows updates as microsoft keeps updating loopholes through which your security could be at risk. It patches up windows so that it can prevent further infiltration by some older viruses too. So you should update it.
I keep my windows up to date, and personally haven't seen any change in speed due to it.

Essential, no

But Microsoft is sending out things that close security holes. If you want to run around with them open, then you should turn it off.

I have it on for every single computer on my network.
