Have an old Compaq deskpro with Windows 2000 Professional, and bootup time has gone from 5 minutes to over 12 minutes.
I regularly use Ccleaner, dskchk, Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag. I've even uninstalled lots of software too (such as Windows Media Player, Baseline Security, Java Console, etc.) all to no avail.
So I think the problem lies with all the programs I rarely use that are starting on bootup, such as the BT Yahoo Browser, BT Helpdesk, BT Communicator with Instant Messenger, etc.
Is there a way I can remove these from starting up automatically, but leave them for a manual startup when needed?
Or am I on the wrong trail, and I should do something else? (Other than buy a new PC - that's a year away:( )
Thanks folks, your guidance will be much appreciated.

If you use ccleaner then you can remove items from startup on there. Click on tools, then click on the startup button and untick everything you don't want. You can always add them back on later if you wish.

I am not familiar with MS W2000, however, I suggest you do need to review your start up program to see which programs are not required @ system start up. Try entering MSCONFIG as this contains all the listings.
Another avenue - you have ccleaner on your PC, have you clicked on Tools option and you should see a list of start up programs and the option to remove them from the list.
Good luck

The easiest way, if your not sure what to do is download the spybot search and destroy program, its free and can be found with a google search....the main reason i say this , is it has a very useful tools menu, one of which shows you all the programs that run when you boot up...it then has a switch next to each one so that you can temp turn off the ones you dont need, and then when your sure you dont need them you can delete them.....really easy to use...good luck.

clean your tower really well if you haven't, they can be a real dust trap and it actually does help them go much faster when you clean them. Also do a disk defragment, and a system clean up, and then go to start, run, and type msconfig, here you will see a box with tabs, click on the tab furthest to the right, this will bring you to a list of applications that boot up when you turn on your pc, wich means you need only the necessary applications checked, this is also where some places put spyware, uncheck anything wierd that you don't need or didnt put there then click ok, and restart.

Ok, you use CCleaner, which is a great start. In CCleaner, tools, startup, you can view and remove startup programs.
Remove the unneccesary items, but do not remove any programs in WINNT or WINDOWS folder. Remove BT and all that.

you need to run the programmes ie msn messenger and when you connect go into tools --->options --> general then unclick the option start msn at windows logon. Its the 1st option in general its says signon. The same with similar applications. yahoo messenger etc
It could also be your anti-virus kicking in if you use norton anti-virus. That could be whats delaying the start up.

this is a friend of mines site. youve probably did the majority of these things but theres a step where itll tell u what is not needed on start up and what is, it cuts down startup time alot. you may want to start from step 1 still though
