I've stayed in a couple of "boutique" hotels in downtown Toronto. If you don't want the huge mega-hotel experience I can highly recommend them. The Soho Metropolitan is in the theatre district, has a friendly and helpful staff and fantastic large bathrooms. http://www.metropolitan.com/soho/

The Cosmopolitan is right in the heart of downtown, near Yonge and Bloor. They are going for a "zen" kind of feel - they have a spa attached and have extremely comfortable beds. It's great if you are staying for more than an overnight as the rooms have little kitchenettes. There is a bar and a restaurant, but no lobby to speak of and a very unassuming entrance down a small side-street. But it is my personal favourite in Toronto. http://www.cosmotoronto.com/

Otherwise, the usual mega-hotels - the Sheraton, Delta Chelsea, Intercontinental, Hyatt are all highly rated.

ROYAL YORK

It's not only a great hotel, but also a Toronto landmark (you're not just staying at another Sheridan or Hilton...). They just re-did all the rooms a couple years ago as well. They have rooms that overlook the Lake, or the city depending on what you are looking for

It's right downtown in between the financial district and the entertainment district, and is acorss the street from central station (called Union Station in Toronto)

If you're looking for bigger hotels, i'd recommend The Four Seasons or the Park Hyatt, they're both in Yorkville which is an upscale shopping area in Toronto. A smaller hotel in that same area that i'd recommend is called The Windsor Arms.
If you're looking for something further downtown, i'd either recommend The Royal York Hotel, or maybe take a look at the St. Germain.

The "fanciest" hotels in downtown Toronto are:

Fairmont Royal York

Le Parker Meridian King Edward Hotel

Park Hyatt Toronto

The Westin Harbour Castle

Cambridge Suites Hotel

That pretty much covers the high end hotels in downtown Toronto. Good luck.

Say no more. The Metropolitan Hotel or SOHO Hotel. The pictures on their Web sites do not do the hotel justice. Believe in me and strongly consider either one of these hotels. Amazing views of the skyline when staying at, actually, either hotel but I was going to say The Met - and great food at their restaurants. The interior of the hotels are modern, clean, feng shui-esque - amazing! I've never been more impressed with any other hotel.

You want the Entertainment District. Any number of hotels downtown are within walking distance, though none are cheap. You didn't specify budget, so I'd opt for the Sheraton - close to everything, clean and safe.

The Royal York on Front. It is the best I have ever stayed at anywhere. If
you are visiting in the bad weather there is an underground concourse to
which will take you downtown. It has good food and room service. The
rooms are massive and comfortable. It feels like luxury at every turn.

Check out Travelocity.com
It will give you the rates of the area you want to stay in AND feedback from previous guest of the hotel. Very helpful. The feedback is based on a "star rating". And people are honest ... everything from crappy towels, great service, sticky carpet, comfortable beds ... I've seen it all on there. It's a nice heads up.

The Delta Chelsea is excellent -- right downtown, very comfortable and very convenient.
You can book online with your favorite travel agent or directly at:
