exempli gratia, Latin for "for example"

2006-12-16 23:15:21 · answer #1 · answered by joanmazza 5 · 2 0

It means 'for example,' and it's a shortened version of the Latin phrase 'exempli gratia' which means 'here's an example.'

It shouldn't be confused (although it often is, by people who ought to know better) with 'i.e.' which means 'that is,' and is short for the Latin 'id est,' meaning ... guess what ... 'it is.'

Sample sentence showing both at work properly:

'Take any soft fruit, e.g. strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, and simmer in hot water until reduced, i.e. about half the volume you had to begin with.'

Hope that helps.
