It's a fair question and you've got some good answers there. Aussies like a good larrikan hero, and Ned Kelly was the most audacious character of them all - fancy wearing a tin bucket on your head - must have been quite heavy and hot in Summer. Ned will always have a place in every Aussie's history books. Long live Ned!

Australia never had a president, since it has always accepted the Reigning Monarch of Britain as Head of State. Ned Kelly was an outlaw in the 19th century who was executed. Many people believe that he was unjustly killed by the authorities, though.

Ned Kelly the bushranger never became Prime Minister. But he does bear a striking resemblance to John Howard they just extracted from the community in different ways. Starlight his second in command is a willing participant also (Costello) a treasure to some.

Edward Kelly was a rural horsethief, thug, bandit, murderer and outlaw. He was badly treated by some local corrupt police in his very early career. On the other hand there is no doubt that his criminal career also began early.
He appears to have believed this had a political basis and may have been partially correct. He appears to have been slightly more intelligent than the average crim.
He had about as much chance of being elected to any office as Jesse James.

You mean the outlaw Ned Kelly who wore armor and robbed banks? No, he was executed before he could run for an office that doesn't exist - you mean prime minister.

Nope, Australia only has prime ministers. However, he was never one of those either. He was only a very infamous outlaw, was eventually captured, and executed. He's actually a very fascinating person, go do some research on him. I believe today he's kind of an icon rather than an outlaw though.

Bushrangers don't generally make good presidential candidates in a country that favours the English parlimentary system.
