My Norton antivurus came up for renewal but I heard AVG is better and have downloaded the trial but the original Norton software is still in place and does its thing everytime I switch on. This means that I can't really trial AVG properly - although I already tend to agree it's better after 3 days - i.e is it the AVG suite that's making start up slow or the combination. Can I temporarily disable Norton until the end of the trial, when I'll decide which to subscribe to, or do I have to to uninstall completely? If I uninstall will the version supplied with the laptop load again even though it needs to be renewed? Answers fit for an idiot please I'm not a techy, thanks.

All good answers but I’ve tried K C’s suggestion - start => run => "msconfig" ) disable the NAV from start up then it will end it from starting – and I can find 2 Symantec services running in ‘Services’ but I can’t see anything that refers to NAV / Symantec / Norton in startup – I can see AVG Grisoft. Any suggestions what name it might be hiding as?

Just right click on the yellow Norton icon and hit the disable section. If you have set a password, you will need to type that in to disable it. Failing that, you can always delete Norton in the Add/Remove programs section of the Control Panel in the Start menu.

Using two anti-viruses together is not advisable, because they can conflict with each other. Get rid of Norton if you are going to use AVG, I am sure you will find it a better option. But since you say that you are using trial version of AVG, I guess that you want to use its professional version. AVG Free is the best option if you want an anti-virus for free, but if you are willing to spend money, why go for AVG? I will recommend Kaspersky or BitDefender. However, remember that whatever be, use only one anti-virus at a time. The same applies to firewalls.

Trial?? Get the AVG FREE Edition! It's soooo much better than Norton. Norton takes up too much RAM. AVG is FREE and uses less RAM letting your computer run faster.

Sometimes it's hard to find the free version...go here: ( http://www.free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5 )

When ur ready to uninstall Norton, just go to Start/ControlPanel/Add Remove Programs/then uninstall everything that says "Norton" including "Norton Automatic Update"

Get that crap off ur computer!

Good Luck!

:)

I would turn off Norton and never turn it on again. AVG does it all better for nothing and it doesn't crash you computer.
