Boiling water (or zapping in a microwave) kills germs, bacteria & parasites that live in water. In some countries, chlorine serves the same purpose. In countries where water is not treated, you run the risk of intestinal parasites (ie; salmonella, e-coli, etc) if ground water has been contaminated by an outside source.

It is to kill the bacteria in the water. It strongly depends on the source from where the water is available to the people. In some countries, there are lakes and rivers which is a cleaner source for drinking water. In countries such as newzealand, even the tapewater is clean. In countries such as malaysia, rain is the main source of drinking water. boiling here is compulsory because when the rain water touches the ground it becomes dirty and full of germs. In countires such as UAE, sea water is used to drink. So the water has to go through a long process inorder to get clean.
It all depends where you stay.

To kill bacteria and parasites. In the US they add chlorine and other additives to do this. A lot of countries do not.
If you are in a foreign country it is very necessary to boil it. You may feel fine for awhile but when your intestines are overwrought with parasites you will wish you did.

The best and most pure water is distilled. Distilled water is 99.9% pure. It is free of chemicals and harmful minerals. When you boil water, it loses the good water in the form of steam. What you get is less water volume, more harmful minerals and dead bacteria.
