I strongly recommend you improve your own spelling and grammar first. If he is a migrant in a lower-class neighbourhood, he will retain their low-class dialect which will inhibit his future prospects. Try and dissuade him from using slang- it is the lazy person's language.
Buy an Oxford English dictionary and sit down with him and get him to use each word in a sentence and explain to you what it means (it has a very easy-to-use phonetic structure in the preface and it is by far the very best dictionary for the English language, England's native tongue).
