Beause they consider the bible as authoritative, which of course is silly. Not only is it a logic error (circular reasoning) to do so, but the hundreds of errors and scores of internal contradictions make it totally worthless as a source of anything.

Freind, You have the wrong impression of true Christians, Yes there is a very many zealous young Christians, I was one years ago, But I have always said, If I can't live it Then I will not try to witness, Friend I do live it, But I still keep silent unless a person ask me something. I have been serving God for over 36 yrs. now, I am not a Novice in serving God or the Bible, Friend I can have a debate with anyone, & really not use my bible., And I am still ever learning, But 36 yrs. has not left me without knowledge, The Bible is not a debate, It is a True Lifestyle living for God & what His Son Jesus Christ shed his blood for all of our sins, & being born into the kingdom of Heaven(Receiving the Holy Ghost) I will never throw a verse or block of verese at you first asking me something, then I will have the right to use the bible. Many on this site want a question answer, but without using the scriptures, They must not know this is the Religion section.

People that quote Bible chapter and verse during a discussion, think because they understand something to be the answer to a question expect the other person/s to understand. Instead of just thinking a second longer maybe, and explaining what they have learned from it, in a way that can be understood. Then maybe they wouldn't come off so smug. I'm a Christian/ Catholic and have been in numerous discussions with others and have to take a stand back while 2nd Corinthians is being screamed out in my face. I get that mostly from the Baptists, and born agains. Sometimes it's almost like they think that they are impressing you with all of that Bible verse. I'd much rather, and I can learn more from someone that may decipher it first and then relay it to me in a way that isn't so Bible thumperly.

Great question!
I have found that many christians (I am a christian myself) use the bible as if it were the answer to EVERYTHING. It is merely a rule book for all of life. If you need any answer to anything, find the verses, even if it doesn't help you.
I myself have found that the bible is far less about giving an answer to every question, and more about the question of who Jesus was, what He did, and the history both before and after His life. If you are interested in these questions, instead of all the others, the bible is helpful.
Otherwise, you just get the lists of verses that couldn't help anyone with anything.

I can relate ..
It is really so frustrating and patronising and it happens far too much.
In this day and age most of us are able to read. If we have a Q regarding religion its because we have not found the answer by reading or rereading the Bible.
We are also sitting in front of a computer and even a child knows how to use Google.
So why do they persist in quoting page after page of dogma to you, or giving you a web site to look up?
I consider it offensive and now just go thumbs down and don't even bother to read the reply/quotation.
If I need a web site or a particular quote I shall ask for it .
Never do they word an answer,"In my opinion..." or "It may be..."
Plus, I don't need my soul saved, and my perception of God is my own personal one that's serving me well!

because they think it is the only way to believe and they do not accept that other may not have the same beliefs. It's fanatical. Bible verses can be riddles and the interpretation made by each one individually. Throwing bible verses to win an argument is the only way the uneducated and misinformed know. They memorize these things and use them as weapons rather than the guidance and healing they were meant to be used for ( if you believe in the bible)

If the question is about the Bible, or spoken by someone who claims to be a Christian the use of the Bible in the answer is entirely appropriate.
But you are right allot of Christians do overuse the Bible when talking to non-Christians. When this happens just tell them you don't believe in the Bible so reading from it doesn't help.
If they still don't listen tell them since they don't feel the need to listen to you, you don't feel the need to listen to them and walk away.

I put Bible verses up with my answers not throwing them at you but to show where it says what I'm saying so that if you take the time to check it out you will easily find that subject, as for a debate I'm not out to debate, No but if you can show me from the Bible that I am wrong you will win the debate. but as for me personally I am not out for debating , although I show the scriptures that back up what I am saying, and in this way I am showing that I don't expect anyone to take my word about what the Bible says but you can look it up for yourself, mostly the things here that people accuse others of, they do so without any back up from anywhere so you cannot research it to where they may have come up with the statements they make! I cannot speak for other people, but those are my reasons.

The same reason that preachers will tell happy people that believe slightly differently that they are living a sad, lonely, miserable, desperate life. To all these types of religions there is a cultish aspect to them, a hateful stockholm syndrome aspect to them. Its used to beat down the human will.

They have no way to argue that which they do not know to begin with. they have been taught that the verses in the Bible are 'magic missiles' capable of "converting the staunchest pagan at a single blow".
In fact, they have very little ground to stand on and are quite insecure in their beliefs to begin with. They need to huddle together for warmth and mutual self-recognition or they feel that the whole thing may come crashing down around them.
