The Statue of Liberty was erected in 1886, when world population was little more than one billion and the U.S. population was 60 million. Many do not realize that the Statue of Liberty was a gift to the U.S. from France, with the title, "Liberty Enlightening the World".

The statue and its symbolism had nothing to do with immigration, but rather hope that the rest of the world would adopt Democracy.

The Emma Lazurus plaque (it is not chiseled in the base), "send me your huddled masses" was added ten years later during the immigration peak of that age.

The sonnet, "New Colossus", was written by Emma Lazarus in 1883 as part of a literary campaign to raise funds for the completion of the Statue's pedestal. Not much attention was paid to it until the tide of immigration surged at the turn of the century. Proceeds that were raised from its auction were used to complete the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. This plaque memorialized the sonnet in 1903 and was placed on the inner wall of the Statue's pedestal. It currently is displayed inside the Statue of Liberty museum.

Since then, U.S. population has expanded by 4 1/2 times. The U.S. is the world's highest-consuming (and most wasteful) nation, and is no longer in need of settlement.

The Statue of Liberty is already restricted and Americans can no longer go up inside due to terrorism threats. Things have changed on many fronts since that statue was put up, haven't they? We didn't pay food stamps, medicaid or aid to families with dependant children, and our own schools weren't being ruined by the huge, illegal influx of poor foreigners who were unable to pay their own way in services even if they wanted to.

Those legally here are not the issue - except for those 'legally here' who become bases for those coming illegally. However, immigration needs definite limits so our schools aren't run down as they are now. And no illegal immigration should be permitted at all. Legal residency should be required for schooling and all but emergency medical service - until stabalization,

The immigration issue is clouded by freaks that think anyone can come to the US without applying for a VISA or to be a citizen. That will never change. The problem is that many feel that if they sneak in the back of a truck or hidden in a vehicle that they deserve the same rights a a citizen. There are many legal ways to come to our country, all we ask is that you do it legally or stay out. This does not in any way violate the theme of the Statue of Liberty or our core country beliefs.

Frankly, if that's what it takes, I guess I would be for taking down the Statue of Liberty - or at least attach a qualifying plaque explaining that this is a historic relic and that what it says doesn't apply in this day and age. Put the statue in a museum, if need be. Illegal immigrants seem to be taking it as an invitation to come on in without paperwork and that has to stop.

I personally have no fondness for the statue. France can have it back. What did it cost to restore the thing?
The immigration issue will end when angry citizens storm the White House, or civil war takes place.

We as a rustic have a acceptable to alter our regulations on immigration as serves our desires. We nonetheless want people, we want clean innovations and we want formidable workers who desire to partake of the yank dream yet we've a acceptable to %. and decide basically as the different u . s . does. We did no longer call that statue however the call nonetheless suits. Its basically that on an analogous time as we furnish liberty to those that connect us and honor our rules, we are no longer required to be a doormat. There are over seven billion people on the planet and if everybody of them is welcome in our u . s . than quickly we can be those desperately attempting to get out.
