Favorite name of all time... Mustafa Kemal. Brings a smile to my face everytime I say it.
Can Turkey join the EU? Of course it can.
Will or should it?
As an American, I hope it will. I enjoyed watching Erdogan with Blair a few days ago. I agree, the whole Cyprus deal sucks. But Turks should understand that it makes much more sense for Turkish Cypriots to ratify the Annan Plan than Greek Cypriots. The Northerners make 1/2 as much money as the Greeks.
Also, the EU would lose all credibilty if it hada member state that didn't recognise another member.

Yes, but it first has to recognise the Republic of Cyprus (Greek side) and stop torturing prisoners.
But even then it is probably behind the likes of Croatia and Serbia in terms of actually going to get in, as many argue its more Asian than European.

They can. But first they must decide for themselves that they are ready for it. Cracking down on writers who criticize the government will not help there admission at all.
