I think i would rather buy gifts for my loved ones and I think it is very thoughtful to give a nice card to each employee and a lot less expensive. In your card you can express how much you like to have them working for you and they would like it alot better than a fruit cake.Merry Christmas all.

Hmm... I have to say I would be fair to all employees, not just certain ones. At my job, out of 30 people, they did a drawing for 1 Turkey and a box of stuffing mix...one person got it. This was done with everyone called to form a circle---we did not know this was going to happen.
The sad part is, the company is one of the top "Fortune 500" company...which means they are not hurting for money. All of the employees had participated in working overtime---mandatory, worked volunteerly OT during the week, and every Saturday was taken away from them. I wish everyone could have seen the looks on everyone's faces when they called the one person's name. This definitely caused a riff in morale.
I say you have to be fair with each associate..even if it means you have to cut back on the 13th month check. I had a boss once..a store director..he bought each and every associate a gift every year...women: ornament in a box; men's case (clippers, etc) in a box. Each present was wrapped and signed by the director with each name for the associate written. He used to bargain with stores that sold stuff like these in bulk or in cases for a minimum price.
There are magazines that sell items in bulk.

I agree with the person above. A personalized card to each of the employees would be perfect. Who does their job expecting a reward at the end of every year? It's hard enough having your own business and the costs through the year.. I think the employees would understand seeing they each have their own families and expenses.

you might give a $20.00-$25.00 gift certificate for a turkey or grocery store. Give only if the business can afford it..Also the 13 mo. bonus people should get the same certificate as everyone else..every one will eventually get their 13 mo. bonus.

I think the average person who works in a school knows they won't receive a cash bonus.
