For a short period of time you would okay, but the issue once it is opened all those lttle micro organisms get in there. Because of the sugar content in Hershey's syrup I would say the likelihood of bacteria or a fungus that feeds on it would begin to grow.

The cooler temperature in the refrigerator doesn not actually prevent this growth completely, but creates a more difficult environment for cell metabolism and thus growth. Unfortunately you will probably not be able to see if there is growth.

As an example, when I was a child my mother would "scrape" mold off cheese or bread, but I learned later in life that when you see a fungal colony on y6our bread, the hyphae are not visible. What you are seeing are the spores they created to reproduce even more. The hyphae take up a larger volume than what you see on the surface, similar to an iceberg. While most fungus are harmless, some can be very dangerous and difficult to treat. Fungul infections require many months of treatment and many cannot be cured except by amputating the infected body part. (I promise you this is true. I cannot imediately recall the fungus name, but it is commonly found in Africa and people who scratch their limbs on rocks with it need to have their limbs amputated. Those who are infected on their torso are out of luck.)

Your immune system will probably fight off any organisms in your syrup since you are exposed to thyem in your house (how else would they get into the Hershey's?)

So.... probably breeding ground but won't kill you. I throw out everything I leave out.
