I suggest getting a tension curtain rod - they're similar to shower curtain rods. You wind them in/out to just beyond the width of the window opening - put on an appropriate curtain, length of fabric, or maybe even a towel - stick it up, adjust the fabric so that all, or a majority, of the light is diminished there you go. :)
Follow the link for a sample of the rod I'm talking about.

I have the same issue, only I don't live in a hot climate. But this may work. Get posterboard, cut it to size to fit in the window, just where the glass is. If it's slightly too small, that's okay. You'll probably have to use more than one sheet. Use duct tape to tape it to the window, this will block out the light from coming in the cracks around the posterboard, and DAMN does duct tape stick good! It'll likely stay in place in even the most humid climate. Personally, I use electrical tape (the blackness is attractive and blocks out light) but it's not sticky enough for a humid climate.

As stupid as this sounds, aluminum foil works great! It is relatively cheap and you can just tape it to the window. It will be under your blind, so you won't see it. And heat is no problem. I mean, did ya ever TRY to get tape off of a window?! LOL. Sweet dreams...

They make "room darkening" pull shades. Inexpensive (you can get them at Wal-Mart) and they can fit "inside" the window where the blinds are now. I put my roll up shade over my blinds and it's dark enough in there during the day you need to use a night light to see.

Try putting a dark sheet over the window, folded over the blinds.. You should also think about wearing a face pillow/ mask to block out sun.

hello..i work night shift as well and i need dark and silence to help me sleep well..i have a throw blanket over my window secured by thumb tacks..(a throw blanket is one of those fuzzy blankets that go on sofa's and couches and stuff..mine has an eagle on it)i also live in an apartment..the throw blanket keeps the room fairly dark..not pitch black but quite dark..as for the thumb tacks..the walls don't belong to me so i don't mind..get some sleep!

Use tacks to secure heavy blankets over the windows. A tack makes a tiny hole. Even if your landlord doesn't like it, what could he/she do? It would get laughed out of court in a property damage lawsuit. And if you were evicted for it, I'm sure it would have to be sufficient grounds for you to sue them..

All of these suggestions sound good but I find that a small towel (or some sort of face mask) over my eyes totally does the job. Good luck!!

aluminum foil works best. Just make sure to put the shiny side out to reflect the heat.
