The Iglesia ni Cristo of the Philippines has a Thanksgiving (around Christmas time, to replace Christmas, and not to be confused with the US Thanksgiving holiday) and claims that "Thanksgiving" is mentioned in the Bible. Is this true? Is a Thanksgiving really mentioned in the Bible or is it more likely that the Iglesia ni Cristo just invented Thanksgiving to discourage members from celebrating Christmas?

That's another one of those INVENTIONS that is not Biblically supported...

It's another reason to gather around that ol' Xmas tree and have some hot cocoa during fellowship. And I'll bet the hat gets passed around in THAT gathering, too!

LOL.

Peace be with you.

No, of direction no longer. Thanksgiving became created a protracted time after the Bible became written. however the Bible says plenty approximately gratitude and thankfulness, this is Thanksgiving's topic. “for each creature of God is powerful, and not something to be refused, if that's won with thanksgiving: For this is sanctified by ability of the understand God and prayer.” –I Timothy 4.4-5

Giving Thanks to the Lord is something mentioned many times in the Bible. You will find it in the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Ezra 11: 3
11 With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the LORD :
"He is good;
his love to Israel endures forever."

Ephesians 5:19-20
19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Colossians 3:16-18
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Hope that helps :)
