my Sony 21" TV (about 7 yrs old) goes to std by mode immdtly after switching on...again and again. Why?

it could be anything. All TVs have a saftey switch (kind of). If it detects something is wrong, it'll put it on standby, sometimes wont even come on. That way nothing else can short out or cause something else worse to happen.

coz it's a sony and it's 7 yrs old. it's xmas.. buy yourself something nice (and don't tell the wife)!
