I'm working on a comic book that takes place on Earth in the future. The idea is that we as a human race continued down our slippery slope until the effects of global warming caused a third ice age of sorts.

Unfortunately I only dabble in the world of science, and would like to know if anyone can offer the technical points of how global warming COULD cause an ice age, and about how long it would take to reach this drastic state should we continue burning fossil fuels and causing way too much pollution.

Thanks in advance for any help that may come my way!

Well, as I understand it, a drastic climate change (please, man caused global warming has never been proven and most of the statistics have been proven false or that natural events in the past have been the same or worse. In fact, so far this winter we have been having record lows all over the country) could, in theory, cause the major ocean curents to change. If the Gulf Stream would shift futher south, then the north Atlantic would become much colder and could start a new ice age.

And, as the ice increases, the amount of sunlight (energy) from the sun reflected back would increase, so it would make the cold worse.

Of course, this is all just theory, and even with the worse case, it would not happen overnight. However, for a work of fiction, you can use almost any story you want to set up your story.

Well first off there shouldnt be a 3rd ice age infact it would more likely be a over heating of the planet turning it into something like venus. And you should have them save the planet by building a satalite that can block out some of the sun rays because I think thats one viable option altho a very risky one...

My name is Rafael Lomena. I write from Alicante (Spain). I am independent investigator on the Accelerated Global Heating and want to share with all something that can turn out from interest to fight this phenomenon.
I believe that the main cause of the Accelerated Global Heating is in the great and increasing forest fires that are whipping to the planet in the last years.
My complete report is in: http://inicia.es/de/rlv/clim.htm
If they do not understand the Spanish they can use the automatic translator that will find in the main page of site:

Thanks to all.

Rewrite the Book of Revelations into Comic book form. It is the future. If you can see yourself walking around in arid heat and sores among your body then you can write an apocalyptic Comic book. With out things to come then I do not see your comic book a success

Scientists say that unless global warming emissions are reduced, average U.S. temperatures could rise another 3 to 9 degrees by the end of the century -- with far-reaching effects. Sea levels will rise, flooding coastal areas. Heat waves will be more frequent and more intense. Droughts and wildfires will occur more often. Disease-carrying mosquitoes will expand their range. And species will be pushed to extinction.

Consequences:

1. More intense rainstorm - warmer temperatures increase the energy of the climatic system and lead to more intense rainfall at some times and in some areas.
2. Global warming is expected to increase the potential geographic range and virulence of tropical diseases as well.
3. Warmer water in the oceans pumps more energy into tropical storms, making them more intense and potentially more destructive.
4. Current rates of sea-level rise are expected to increase as a result both of thermal expansion of the oceans and of partial melting of mountain glaciers and the Antarctic and Greenland ice caps.
5. Some ecosystems, including alpine meadows in the Rocky Mountains, as well as tropical montane and mangrove forests, are likely to disappear because new warmer local climates or coastal sea level rise will not support them.
6. As glaciers melt and warming waters expand, sea levels will rise anywhere from eight inches to two-and-a-half feet over the next century.
7. In Florida, seawater will advance inland as much as 400 feet in low-lying areas, flooding shoreline homes and hotels, limiting future development, and eroding the state's beloved beaches.

global warming is a myth designed to scare people into funneling money into the hands of "researchers who can design the "study" to produce a need for "X"
"X" turns into new, expensive products that can be "mandated into law" or "justify" extra taxes restrictions etc.
Don't worry about the technical aspects..just jump right in with whatever "facts" you can imagine/create...just keep referring to the "studies" that have "reported.xxxx..."
and your comic book will be another example of fiction by design
