Focus on breathing is absolutely right. Try for a short period at a time at first if you can not go for a while.
Also, try to set aside a small area for it where people do not normally pass through in your home.
If you do not like the cross legged position, try another position that is comfortable and keeps you in good posture.
Theres many books on meditation and I am sure online instruction as well if you have a specific purpose or style you are after.

Alright, here's what I did in the beginning:
First get a candle, just a simple candle, and light it. Then, sit in a comfortable position. For me, I just sat with my legs crossed on the floor. Then, focus on that candle flame while breathing through your nose so as to not blow out the flame, and concentrate on the breathing. Slowly clear your mind. Make certain that there is no thought left. When you have done this, close your eyes and visualize the candle flame. Think of it as burning away all of your troubles, your thoughts. See the candle flame in your mind, visualize it flickering.
After awhile you will no longer need the candle and you will be able to just focus on your own, you'll be able to imagine that candle flame consuming your problems as it burns. The candle is only a tool to help you. All I can say is practice, practice, practice. You must be diligent with meditation or you shall never get it down satisfactory. Good luck, my friend.

guided meditations are the best way to start meditating. it helps to keep the mind distracted while you let yourself go into "being"
try and find something that speaks to your heart, that you are comfortable with and feels "right". could be a prayer or a mantra, or just someone telling you what to focus on.- your breath, your chakras...etc
excercise before to open up all of your chakras, and after to ground you.
the more you practice, the easier it will get to be in that place of peace, and the more pleasure and benefit you will recieve
good luck!

keep trying.
it's very hard to not think distracting thoughts at first, but it gets easier with time. try focusing on your breathing. if that doesn't work, i would reccomend pretending you are breathing in a color and breathing out a different color.
