I gained the respect of my family by, at age seventeen moving out with my boyfriend whom I married without any of them. I was the oddball of my family, too because my family members are very talkative people and I am more mysterious & stays to myself.
They all doubted my feelings for my boyfriend until I married him without any of them, we set boundaries by deciding to stay in Houston after Hurricane Katrina. I chose my husband over them and that had never been done by any of my family members but me. I did this because my husband gave to me the love and acceptance that none of them has ever given me and because he deserves the love and acceptance he never experienced, & to prove to them that my love is deeper than any of their loves
put together because one of their favorite sayings when someone is showing another person love is, "Ain't that much love in the world." (everytime they had a relationship, it never lasted long because they never knew how to love or was taught how to love, I never was taught either but I taught myself & accepted the assistance of my husband who gave me the greatest love I ever could find). My husband and I have more love than the world could ever supply and I show it no matter who is looking including my mother. I am the most loving person in my family and I keeps it real, true, and honest at all times.
To answer your question about how to gain their respect is, sometimes you have to branch off and away from them while proving your point and creating a statement of positivity, encouragement, and by setting a wonderful example. Prove them wrong in any way you can!

I understand that the elders in the family are taking much liberty with you... where is loss of respect or face with elders, dear? I should say that they do not show their moods of anger out of any hatred for you - but out of an assumed freedom to share their feeling with a sweet youngster.. I had the same treatment in my younger days from the elders in the family - I was the last but one in a big family of six scions. But the moment I had a problem in study or carreer they rushed to my rescue - albeit complaining that I was not careful and so on,,,They were happy and lavished their love whenever I won laurels in the fields of my specialisation.. So you will find that show of moods is not to be cared at all. You simply maintain your cool and react to them politely... and you will find the change in them by and by.. (I however did not have the wisdom to keep my cool in my youth and still they always helped me)... All the best...

the way way you gain is respect is by sticking your ground that may be a cliche thing to say but believeing in what you know and brushing the dirt off your sholder will go a long way in respect, being your own man is something that will go a long way.

Well,, I strongly beleive that RESPECT is obtained by someone who respects theirselves. You must have dignity and pride. Stand-up.. Show them that you are worth it. Don't let them boss you around for nothing.. Love yourself.. But don't hate them.. Their still your family and if you have obtained self-respect, the next step is to Love them but don'tm let them abuse you... The rest just flows with... Good luck

If you respect yourself, others will respect you. Respect your elders, by being polite and obedient. Same to your parents. In return, they will respect you.
