The thing is I didn't start drinking until 20, but since then, I've had more than a few binge nights that have had pretty negative outcomes. Never been arrested or caused any major harm, but I've lost a few friends because of it and have generally been an *** and pushed things too far. Last night, more of the same - out with a girl and her friends and just got out of hand and don't even really remember how the night ended. This just can't happen anymore, and I need to decide if I should just give up drinking entirely. I think that I should. Any thoughts?

Hey you all, thanks for the feedback so far. It's a decision that I want to make and am going to do, but it helps to have it affirmed by you all. At first I kept saying, "Oh, I'll just make a point to only have 2 and then everything will be ok;" however, I never really just have 2 and about once a month I go completely overboard. I definitely see how this could turn into a bigger problem, and I'm just fortunate that nothing truly terrible has come of it yet. But again, thank you all for the feedback.

I was going to say "Yes -- just have one or two and go home; I did, not that hard," but -- then saw the "never really just have two..." Spend a _long_ time not drinking at all, then, but you can eventually try and see if you can have just two...

Yeah -- stop. Time to grow up. That sort of crazy-drunk is sort of okay at 21, but at 27, it's wearing a bit thin and not at all charming. You have nothing to lose by stopping, but you're clearly at the point where you're going to start losing things if you keep going.

The only other advice I have is that if you're hell-bent on drinking some night, get yourself well away from your friends, and hang out at some down-and-out tavern. The sort of place filled with older alcoholics, that never cuts anybody off or bars anybody; you know, last-resort dive. You won't hurt anybody you know, you'll still get drunk, and you'll probably have such a depressing time that you'll never want to do it again for fear of becoming a regular at such a place.

I definitely think drinking is a serious problem for you and you would be wise to give it up totally before you end up getting hurt, hurting someone else, or end up dead in a ditch somewhere. I know that sounds extreme but that happened to a women I worked with who got too drunk too often, and then accidentally pissed off the wrong person one night, and never lived to see the next day.
Sadly, when I first saw how she acted when she was drunk, I could tell something like that would eventually happen to her, but I never said anything.
So hopefully somebody will stop you before it is too late.

Yes, listen I had a problem with drinking for years and finally my husband got upset and told me I better quit. It was not as hard as you might think and now I don't even want to take a drink - just makes me nauseous thinking about drinking.

You already know the answer to your own question. How can behavior that causes you to lose friends and completely blank out on what you did be a positive element in your life?

You are still young and sound like you are becoming an alcoholic. If it is affecting your social life like you are saying then it IS becoming a problem. STOP now before it becomes a BIG problem.............like going to jail for DUI and having strained relationships w/family and friends.............or having blackouts!!!! Or having the shakes in the morning???????? Quit NOW before it gets worse and it will........................please stop now. OH...and it doesn't matter when you started drinking........i've known people who didn't start until their thirties and ended up alcoholics.........
