Basically the balloon goes where the wind takes it. When they're ending their flight, the pilot starts to look for an open/flat field to put the balloon down. When the balloon touches down, it'll drag about a hundred or so feet, and with any luck sit upright when it's done skidding. Sometimes it'll lay on it's side. The chase crew then reaches the balloons final destination and if it's on private property, have to ask permission to gain access to their property to retrieve the balloon. They then package the balloon up onsite and shuttle the passengers and crew back to their origin.

A hot air balloon ends up wherever the operator brings it down at as long as weather conditions or mechanical problems don't bring it down in an unintended location.

I get what you are asking... the rest of these people haven't been very helpful with thei answers...
You already know they end up on the ground because of gravity. No need for them to be jerks about it.
Pilots of all categories of aircraft are trained to pay a lot of attention to the weather and weather patterns. A balloon pilot will look at the wether and predicted winds to predict where he or she will be blown off to, but of course there will always be some uncertainty of where exactly they will end up, and will have to just pick the best landing spot.

Stored in a trailer or a hanger/garage to keep out of the elements.
Sad story near me recently, the fuel tank stored in a pilots garage
exploded and burned down his house. (luckily, no was home to be injuried/killed)

After one lands, the recovery vehicle comes to it and the crew collapses the envelope, loads it onto the vehicle, and drives home.
