I have a pile of dead AA batteries (now switched to rechargeable) and I need to get rid of them. I heard it's really bad if you just throw them in the bin - all the acid leaks out into the soil - big pollution problem. What can I do with them that causes less damage?

You did the best thing by changing to rechargable ,, to find out more in your area about recycling call the local council.. or
Phone the national Helpline 08453313131 hope that helps........ I think the problem of collection is a possible fire risk..

Compared to the many things that go into a landfill, a pile of AAA batteries is not going to make much difference one way or the other. If you want to salve your conscience, think of it as assisting the breakdown of more complex wastes. You could always learn how to recycle them safely yourself, and then advertise for used batteries. Try contacting EverReady, Burgess, Duracell, and Rayovac to see if they will accept them for recycle. They just might.

connect the queue on the community recycling centre (see my question approximately city councils being green) who've centers for dealing with them. on the different hand, if the pc is in working order, there are charities around you need to donate it to who will the two locate somebody much less fortunate who could make good use of it or strip it down for its useable components and accurately (in a green experience) eliminate something. I would say the best thing to do is mail them back to the company who made them.
