I've pretty good grasp of the english language, but I find it very difficult to chat informally with people. I am okay discussing technical stuff with my colleagues.

But when it comes to socilaizing I don't have the nececssary fluency ? What would you recommend to improve fluency in english ? Any books ,websites would help ?

BTW, I am living in US. Are there any groups I can attend to improve my fluency ?

Thanks.

Practice make perfect. Learn to speak to people always, that is the only way to improve.

Someone answered previously that "practise" would help develop better fluency. As a teacher of "English as a Foreign Language" I would have to agree. And being in an english speaking country you don´t have an excuse.
Sometimes it is important to lose the inhibition of making mistakes. By making mistakes and listening to how native people speak you can only improve your fluency. It will take time, but how long will depend on you. Don´t be shy! Americans are friendly and sociable.
In the meantime reading newspapers and magazines can only help.
Try to socialise and get stuck into the conversation.

How long have you been in the U.S.? I've been here for 2 years. It's kinda hard to talk normally at first but now I can. I only did 2 things: read and listen. I read a lot of english books at home, while in school, I listened to how people talk so that I can blend in with their slang words (not the curse words, lol). After my first 2 months of going to school here in the U.S., my English teacher suddenly moved me from regular English to Honors English. You don't have to attend to some groups. Just try hard and you can definetely do it.

I agree with the idea of getting a partner from US or UK. It worked for me all those years ago when I left my country and landed in-the-middle-of-nowhere in Scotland. Then I met my present partner (very English) and I left my Latin spirit behind forever.... While he is becoming more and more Italian by the day!!!

Otherwise, whatch TV and films, see friends, talk as much as possible and read books/magazines.

try joining message boards. They are informal and you can find one to suit your interests, but they are better than online chat rooms because people don't type nonsense and you have time to read posts and type an answer. Also try finding a pen pal as to practice. And since you are in the US, don't be shy to go out and talk to people. Tell them to slow down if you need to.
