Aside from the fact that they aren't good for anyone, it would be too difficult for governments and police to control. If it was legal, the 'industry' would be huge, and they'd have big problems gaining a monopoly on it. The drug scene is so scattered, and it comes from all over the world. Even if one country made it legal, all the others wouldn't fall into line and chaos would result.

All of the above answers are wrong. Most of the answers you get here on these topics will be absolutely clueless.

You can find a short history of the drug laws at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/History/whiteb1.htm

You can find a longer history at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/studies/cu/cumenu.htm

Both are quite fascinating. You will find surprises on every page.

In short, some drugs were made illegal because of racism, ignorance, and nonsense. Marijuana was outlawed for two reasons. In the southwestern states, it was outlawed because "All mexicans are crazy and marijuana is what makes them crazy." In other states, it was outlawed because of the fear that heroin addiction would lead to the use of marijuana -- exactly the opposite of the modern gateway myth.

The people who wrote the laws recognized that it would be unconsitutional for the US Government to put restrictions on what people put into their own bodies. Therefore, they wrote the laws as "tax acts". That is, they put a tax on the trade in the drugs and made the tax so high that nobody could afford to pay it. They also required licenses to sell the drug, and then didn't issue any licenses. As a result, it didn't matter whether someone actually consumed the drugs. The offense is committed at the time the drugs are bought and sold. There is no way someone can legally take the drugs because there is no way they can legally buy them.

The above links contain a more complete description of the constitutional issues.

There is a very good reason for drugs being illegal. Most drugs can affect a person's senses so bad that they can harm themselves and harm others. They can do things under the influence of drugs and wake up in the morning, not remembering anything. A person can murder someone in cold blood under the influence of drugs and never remember a thing.
Illegal drugs shouldn't be regulated or made available to the general population beucase then we will have tons of stoned people running around not knowing what they are doing. The goverment is actually right in their belief that drugs are a serious matter and should be kept out of the hands of the citizens of their country.

Actually pot is legal in Amsterdam but the areas around it haven't erupted into anarchy.

However why should drugs be legal? What benefit do we gain? Who exactly is helped? The companies that produce tobacco products are already being sued like crazy, and I don't think the government can stand the liability of legalizing obviously dangerous substances.

So you would like to see 5 year olds on PCP ? Is that what you are asking ( please don't e-mail me ) . You are admitting to yourself that there is a need for meth to be illigal and on the other hand you are asking the question why are drugs illigal. Make up your mind.

Illigal drugs are illigal for the simple reason if you legalize it, anybody can obtain it easily. And you just admitted that meth does some crazy things to people.
So I guess you answered your own question.

The ONLY reason they are illegal is so that the American gov't can hire grunts to enforce the anti-drug laws. After Prohibition, thousands of cops, ATF, other pigs had nothing to do b/c they didn't have to enforce the alcohol ban anymore, so they gov't made something else illegal to get them work.

It would put peoples lives in danger if our airplane pilots, bus drivers, taxidrivers etc. had easy access to drugs and were goobered up all the time.
