You're making such a great choice going with a black Lab. As you can see by my picture, I own one as well. Even at just under 14 weeks old, she's a great dog!!! I also have 2 cats and the first couple of days were rough but once I got the hang of what to do, things went smoothly. What I did was put Kya (Lab) in her crate and allowed the cats to sniff around her to get used to the scent. This also gave Kya the opportunity to smell them as well. When I did allow her out after the few days, I did it in short stints of her being around the cats. No Kya didn't stay in the crate the whole few days, LOL, the cats are usually upstairs where Kya wouldn't go. After another couple of days, they were all fine. My oldest cat is very prissy and doesn't like to play but she doesn't run from Kya. She does however smack her if she nips at her tail. (She's a Persian so she has long hair which Kya loves!) But my younger male LOVES to play with Kya. It's hilarious watching them run around and wrestle. So by this experience, and the fact that Kya's mothers owner has 4 cats, I'd say yes Labs can be great with cats. They just need introduced properly. Growing up with them will be a huge help! As far as names, I like Emma for a girl and Cody for a boy. Max is too common for dogs for my taste. Have fun, puppies are a handful and Labs are high energy as pups, but they are so fun and loving and just wonderful dogs in general!!

labs tend to be very nice dogs, and as long as you socialize them with the cat from the get go, they should be fine. Although if your cat is not used to a dog around the house, this will be a little bit harder.

As far as the name of the puppy, I think that puppies are a lot like people, they each have their own personalities and passions. When I got my puppy home last year, I could not decide on a name at all! Eventually we named him sammy, and it suits him perfectly. I think you should watch your puppy, see how they are as a little being and then name them. Keep in mind chances are the middle name of a dog will neer be used, so emma kristen will just turn into emma and em, and cody max will spend his life going by cody and chances are be shortened to code after a while. Dogs havea funny way of picking up nick names like that.
Good luck with the puppy!

Black labs are great! They're big goofy friendly dogs. He'll probably love the cat. My black lab, Princess, loved cats. Now, the cat may not love him at first, but there's a trick you can do for that. Bring a piece of the dog's bedding home before you bring the dog, and put it where the cat sleeps, so he can get used to the smell. Smell is a big factor with animals. :)

I like the names you mentioned. Most of my puppies have had people names, too. :)

I have a black lab too! theyre great dogs. Whenever my he sees my cousins cat they dont get a long too well. Hes afraid of the cat cause it can be kind of vicious sometimes...

My dogs name is Bear. But when me and my boyfriend get our now puppy (which is hopefully SOON! hehe) we're naming him Murphy if its a boy or Marley if its a girl. Those are my two favourites :D

Do you have any favourite movies? I usually end up naming my pets after characters in movies. Like my fish is named Merlin like the wizard in sword and the stone lol. Just remember whatever name you pick is going to have to stick for a long time so choose wisely!

Good Luck with your new puppy!!

The coat colour of a dog can not tell you if a dog will be good with cats.

if you are getting a puppy you will need to speed time have soclisation sessions with the puppy & dog together & never leave the 2 unsupervised until they can be trusted alone.

It's quite common for cats to terrorise dogs.

You might wanna consider a yellow lab. I had a black lab and in the summer he got so hot because of his black coat he dug holes in my backyard and laid in them to stay cool, totally destroying my yard.
