My 2 years old female pit just had a litter of 9, I know her backround as well as the fathers. I would like to keep one of the pups which gender would be best for the mother. I understand they will have conflicts but which would she get along with better. She is our only dogs and she plays very well with other dogs. She is also going to be fix in a few weeks.

Sounds like she is a great mommy, and kudos to you for getting her fixed soon! I would keep a girl. I think they have less dominance issues. Is there one puppy she is really close too? Perhaps a girl she seems to spend more time with? And just be sure and get her fixed as soon as possible too.

Congratulations! You pit sounds like she's a great mom!

For choosing you own puppy, try to think about personality more than gender. Since your current dog seems to be well-mannered and docile, you should consider what type of personality would best fit you and her. A litter of puppies will have a range of personalities (you'll see their characteristics develop around 5 or 6 weeks). Some will be more submissive and some will be more dominate. Although dominate puppies can be fine pets with the right training, he/she may have small fights with their mother as the superior dog. A more docile puppy won't question your authority as much. Watch the pups play together and you'll soon see who is more apt for a leadership role and who is more of a follower.

Both male and female can have either personality. Also, when you 'fix' a dog, males tend to roam and hump less and females won't go though a messy heat cycle. The gender differences equal out and all your left with is pure personality.

Try this PAT (Puppy Aptitude Test) to try and find the desired intelligence and working ability. http://www.tervuren.com/cachetnoir/Puppy%20Aptitude%20Test.htm

I hope this helps.

Do you have a particular reason you are keeping a pup? Do you want another dog for companionship? Are you thinking of breeding it someday?
Those questions can help you decide.

Otherwise, you should do fine with either gender, but a female would be my choice if you are not having any of your dogs spayed/neutered. You don't want the little guy to get his mom pregnant someday, too weird and bad breeding.
A female would be my choice, but if you want a companion pet I suggest you just list all of the puppies for sale and keep the last one. Then you are finding homes for the others first which is the most responsible thing to do now that they are born. You need to start actively pursuing homes for those puppies now. Sometimes pits can be hard to place because of their reputation and a lot of insurance companies will not let people get home policies if they have a pit.
Good luck, and congrats. Hope they all are healthy and get good homes.

Pit bulls have a tendency to be same sex dog aggressive. I would say keep a male for this reason. Your pup just turned two years old. This is the age where most pit bulls start showing their dog aggression. *Note to all you pit bull naysayers out there, I said DOG aggression.* And the same will go through with the pup you keep. There is always the possibility of developing the dog aggression. No it doesn't happen with each dog but better to be safe the sorry. That's your doggies happiness you are playing with there.

Just please please get your girl fixed. And please please get the pup fixed that you decide to keep. Taking away the parts of the dog that enables them to reproduce generally make them more mellow and easier to live with. It's good for their health too!

Booya, you're ignorant... And a jerk! Pits are not baby killers. Just let them play, when the westie squeels it's teaching your pit that it hurts, this is something that she should have learned from her litter mates but may have not had a chance to. I would let it go on for a while and find out how far it really would go to see if maybe this pit needs to see a behavioralist. But for now don't worry about your dog getting hurt, your pitty still has puppy teeth. If the pit hasn't learned with in a couple weeks that it hurts try putting her on a long leash to keep a focussed eye on her, every time she does something alarmingly wrong lead her out the front door and stand outside with her until she calms down. Take her back in as if it never happened and repeat the process several times. You have the potential to solving this prob. in a single day. Please please please don't give up on her. I'm sure she's a really big sweetheart and I'd hate to hear of her ending up in a shelter.

I would keep either one of the sexes that you like the best. After I breed my female Doberman eight years ago I kept a male and a female and have had no problems between the mother and either one of her pups. Since you are getting her fixed it wouldn't matter if it was a male that you kept. Of course I had mother and both her pups that I kept fixed. Have fun. She'll love and enjoy either of the sexes all the same. You could do like I did and keep one each!!!(smile)

I'd keep a girl. They may have some conflict anyway, since dogs establish pack order without consideration to gender. But, I find females a bit more docile in most cases.

In short dogs get along better with the opposite sex, it really all depends on how dominant your ***** is.

It could be possible that as the puppy gets older it may become the leader of your pack, these things happen....whoever is the best suited leader.

You should select the puppy that suits your energy levels & your environment the best.

Save a female. A male will try to mount her as he gets older ( no joke ).

In my opinion, you should keep a girl, but in any case keep the one you get most attached to :)
