We get most of our moral codes, value systems and behaviour patterns from our parents if they have been involved in our upbringing as in most cases. Some of these patterns get altered due to external influences like media and friends and some of these are shaped by our genes.
The role of parents is so complex--with no proper guide books or training classes for the same. Besides no general rule can apply as each child is a unique creation and requires different specialized parenting. We all owe our parents so much for the toil, tears, years, sacrifices and energies they have put into shaping us. If we like who we have become----then they have had a major role to play in the shaping.
Parents should be treated with respect, kindness and concern. As we get older and stronger and more independant---they get older and frailer and more dependent. We required their finger to walk, now they often need our shoulders to rest on. We thrived on their unconditional love and support, now they expect the same from us. We were given all their money could afford for us, now we must see that they have adequate financial security. They need our emotional support, physical proximity and compassion.
But----all this does not mean that we lose our own personal identities and still remain little children. We have to grow into mature independent thinking and functioning adults. If at times we are not in sync with their wishes or desires----that is fine. All conflict and dissent should be treated with healthy mutual respect and open communication.
We should treat our parents the way we would like our children to treat us----I think that sums it up fine.

We can only treat others the same way we treat others, so if we learn to treat ourselves with love and respect, we will treat others similarly as an extension with ourselves.
Otherwise it would be a farce, a make believe act.
So our first responsibility is towards ourselves, this holds especially true if we believe that our parents didn't treat us fairly or justly during our childhood, we have to remember that they only treated us the way they had learned from their parents to treat themselves and others.
So we have to learn forgive them for that and learn to be better, in actions and in thought, and not repeat their mistakes as parents as human.
Because that is how the human species evolves, by using the previous generation as a teacher, as learning ground and loving more than the previous one.
That way our parents are our eternal teachers, for they carry in them all the life lessons we need to learn and the challenges we need to overcome during this single lifetime, because what they couldn’t overcome in their lives we have to do that, through our aware choices and actions thereof.
So how we treat our parents now is our personal responsibility now as on that depends how our children learn to treat us, subconsciously, as life always gives back what we give to it, in return of our actions towards it.
It is the responsibility of each consecutive generation to evolve its behaviour that the previous one and that includes to love more that previous on its own conscience and do not base our love on their actions and choices.
The true reflection of human evolution is each subsequent generation learning to love better that its previous one.

I try to treat my parents with the utmost respect. They raised me and taught me the things I needed to know to make it in this world. I wouldn't be here without them. I love and respect them greatly.
