If you are talking about toenail fungus that causes the nail to become thick & discolored, then the fungus is UNDER the nail, not ON the nail. You can pick it up from a variety of ways, like wearing dirty socks, or someone elses socks, etc......

I asked the same question to a Internal Medicine Dr. and his response was that they are not sure why it happens. He also said the medicine to get rid of runs about 800 bucks. Oh! Once it is gone - it is possible that it will return!
