....why do people keep having children when they cannot afford them? I'm a young mother too of a newborn, but I don't ask the government for a free hand out. I work two jobs and take care of my family. Why should the rest of us pay for a teenager or un wed couple that was not wise enough to use protection? Birthcontrol is free from the government too, but no one is eating that handout up?

No, I'm not saying only people with a substasial amount of money should have children. I'm saying, if you know you won't be able to support a child, protect yourself or use birthcontrol and wait until you are financially stable (i.e. married, or with a partner to help support). Our society needs to start frowning upon teenagers that get themselves or others pregnant. It is unacceptable and people are too quick to sign up for financial aid. Meanwhile, the rest of us who got married and THEN had a child are limited because we pay so much for those who just couldn't use birthcontrol.

Stop with the excuses, birth control is FREE if your income is low enough. I know because I worked for Planned Parenthood. My sister-in-law (mother of 4 with 3 different men) said it herself, "Children are great tax write offs."

Oh, now I am reading complaints that the free condoms are not good enough, they take away from your pleasure. Sorry the American public can't provide you with more. DEAL WITH IT AND USE THEM!

A FEW PENNIES Kelle Cole? Half of my paycheck goes towards taxes, if not more. Man, I wan't to work where you do for they must cut you some slack.

And another thing, for some of you, stop telling me to put myself in other people shoes. There are no excuses. I managed to not get pregnant and have a child before I got married. I don't feel sorry for people who accidently got pregnant. Grow up and get a job or two, seriously. What I originally said needed to be said. There is a problem in this country and it needs to stop. You can only stretch tax money so far. USE BIRTH CONTROL!

If insurance doesn't cover birthcontrol, then use a condom. STOP with the excuses people! There are ways to prevent pregnancy!

I don't care how rude my questions is or how rude my answer was to that other person's wic question. Maybe next time she opens her legs, she will think twice. What I said had to be said. There are too many babies out of wed lock these days. Chidren need a MOTHER and a FATHER! Not a mother and a welfare check!

YES, I did pay for the birth of my child. After isurance, ALL $5,000 of it. And my husband and I pay into our insurance, no hand outs thank you. Yes, I've needed help, but never asked for it. Like is said, I got a second job. You just want to brag about your six figures. Like you really help people, I scoff at your comment. What, did you put a dollar in the Salvation Army bucket at Crate and Barrel. Please, you rich people don't help, you make the situation worse.

I MADE NO ONE'S INSURANCE RATE GO UP. IM JUST STEAMING ABOUT THAT COMMENT. I PAID FOR EVER PENNY OF MY CHILDS BIRTH. DON'T YOU MAKE SUCH A COMMENT YOU FOOL.

I sum up my question in one final note. Use birth controll, free or not, I really don't care. Most of you are on welfare and getting free food anyway, so you can afford to use birthcontroll, whatever form you choose (just use your boose money). The rest of us don't need to be paying for your "moments of pleasure."

Because it's easier to give them a handout than to have to bear finding babies in the dumpster and roadside. I think that the system is flawed but needs to be there. The horrible policy is the one where an illegal can wander into a hospital and they have to give him care. We pay more for that in high health care costs than the welfare mom.

Teenagers are still children. There are adults who some would argue have no right bringing children into this world (for financial and mental health reasons). Birth control does not a guarantee of protection.

Some people never get the education they need to secure good jobs. Their entire environment and people are their norm and if everyone around them doesn't do much, that may become their standard. This standard translates into the foundation by which they have their family.

On another note, many people have children for their own selfish reasons. Some try to replace a void in their lives and lack a realistic understanding of what it takes to raise a children. Coupled with a mediocre education, the possibilites are limited.

I hear what you are saying about working two jobs to support your child and that is the way it should be. But when you have a new born and no stable income, you have no choice but to get support where you can.

I think what you are getting at is that people need a wake up call about the implications of their actions now on their abilities as parents later on. I believe that these issues are public issues that evidently affect us all. For some people, that government handout is the only handout they ever had.

And by the way, being married doesn't guarantee anything either. Things happen. Even with the best intentions, you find people who have the education the partner etc. but still need assistance. This country isn't a piece of cake. The welfare state was created for a reason.

I think that what you are getting at is perhaps the facilitation of half *** people incapable of supporting their own children by Welfare. I argue that by illiminating that ''handout'' people will still continue to have children they cannot afford. It's not a new concept. When the government is ready to deal with the root causes of this need, then maybe things will change.

I'm sure you already know this, but no form of birth control is 100% effective. Sometimes people get pregnant even when they're using contraceptives. And sometimes it's not possible to support yourself and a baby on what you can earn at a minimum wage job. In my case, I got pregnant while on the pill when I was 20 years old. I was active duty military and I still qualified for food stamps and WIC.

I really don't think you should judge people without knowing the whole story. Sometimes people have the best of intentions and things just don't work out the way they planned. People get divorced, they split up, unexpected medical situations arise. I'd much rather that they ask for and get help to ensure the baby gets what it needs than to have a baby or small child starve or go hungry, or God forbid, live in a situation where they're being neglected while mom works three jobs. Financial problems cause a lot of stress, and that can lead to the baby or small child being physically abused. If that can be avoided through social support programs, then why would we not want that mother to take advantage of whatever help is available to help get her back on her feet?

Rather than be upset about the fact that people get these "government handouts" that YOU are paying for ... be mad at the fact that US citizens pay for millions of dollars worth of airplane tickets for politicians that are never used. Be mad that they buy $5000 toilet seats with your money. Be mad that you ate a 99 cent cheeseburger the other day while they were dining on a $1000 per plate dinner. Be mad that everytime you see the White House every light is on and you're paying their electric bill and paying for that sparkling water their dogs drink.

Step back and imagine for 1 minute that you were in the position of the people asking for help. I agree that if you can't afford the child, you shouldn't have it. But did you know that MANY insurance companies don't cover birth control? Yes birth control is free, but they'll only hand out condoms "no questions asked". And who the heck wants to use those? You have to be low income to get pills/shots.

So rather than go into a question and bash the person asking a question (that was very rude) put yourself in her shoes and think about the lengths you would go to for your baby to have food. Would you stand in that welfare line or let your baby starve?

*ADDED COMMENT -- Forget the fact that the condoms take away pleasure. I'm allergic to latex. Yeah ... that'd be fun! And yes, I know that they make them with different materials, but have you seen the prices of those?

You got a 2nd job? And who took care of your child? I think what we need is more mothers at home with their children.

I would like to say that thank god I live in a country where you are not made to fell like s**t from working people because you find yourself on government hand outs for some reason or another. My husband has been out of work for a couple of months due to no fault of his and we have been getting financial help to live with our young family (its not much, if enough). He starts a new job in the new year and our tax dollars will go to help other families/people out of work. We wont complain about that cause it may be us again one day. Should we not have had our children on the off chance that one day there would be no job for my husband or we became too ill to work.

God bless Australia, its health care and welfare support. God bless Australian people!

IF you worked for Planned Parenthood then you KNOW that NO birth control method on the market today (including condoms dear) is 100% effective. Condoms tear and "leak" and spermacides don't always work if they've sat on a pharmacy shelf for a long period. Yes there IS that wonderful "morning after pill" but even IT is only 85% effective used properly AND it does NOT prevent fertilization, it only prevents implantaton when it works. Now what was it you were saying about birth control sweetums?

you maybe right, however, it's hard for some people to get jobs. For example, I have a college degree and am a registered medical assistant, no one wants to hire me because I have no experience and don't speak Spanish. I am willing to work outside of my area of expertise, however, here again, I need experience. I am working for a doctor now, part time, about 8-10 hours a week for extremely low salary. On that salary I have to support myself, my daughter, pay rent, electric, phone and gas bills and buy food. So, what is your suggestion now?
I do agree about using birth control. When I had my daughter, I was with her father, deeply in love and did not know he would leave me for someone else...........

first of all...
everyone makes mistakes and calling someone stupid or dumb, second of all if your tax money wasnt going to helping these people it would be going to something else the govt WILL find a way to take money from you regaurdless, another thing while im at it, true the parents made their mistake but by them not being able to support the children they made are you going to deprive the child of ANYTHING food medical etc its like what a few pennies out your paycheck dude get real and get a heart you would want the govt to help you, great you can work 2 jobs and take care of your child what about those who cant and when they got pregnant maybe they could and something happend you never know so dont be an azz!

Actually, birth control is not free from the government. Planned parenthood charges $20 bucks for a month's supply of pills. If you're a single mother, $20 can put gas in your car for at least a week.

It's good that you're taking care of your family, but your situation isn't everyone's situation.

The reason we 'pay for a teenager or un wed couple that was not wise enough to use protection' - your words - is that God forbid we be in that situation and not have anyone to turn to.

Maybe instead of being so incensed that others dare use the resources established, you should thank your lucky stars you have the ability to provide for your family.

Enough with the "birth-control is unavailable" garbage or "it's not 100% effective". People get pregnant because they are careless and/or (more likely) they WANT to get pregnant. They are dissatisfied with thier lives and think a cute little baby will brighten everything up and be so sweet in their little Tommy Hilfiger outfit while they cruise the mall. Or better yet, they think it will make their immature, skanky boyfriend stop cheating or love them more or force him to stay. Barf. They're immature and bored and end up ruining 2 peoples' lives, if not more. (I say 2 because once the "dad" realizes what he's in for, he takes off.) If they would get up off the couch and get an education, they would realize that babies aren't toys...they are people and responsibilities and something they are in no way ready for. Good question.
