I have a Celtic spiral to symbolize Life, Death, and Rebirth.
But it represents my ancestry as well as my belief in reincarnation.
Not terribly original, I guess, but it works for me.

How big do you want the tattoo? I drew something for AP art senior year in high school two years ago that this question made me think of. It's a life-after-death theme but you could interpret it however you want. It would probably make a big tattoo, but it's not a phoenix!
It's an old guy climbing what looks to be a spinal cord and then a young guy with wings emerges from the top. Here are two photos (they're not very good quality, sorry). Tell me if you want more shots if you're interested in the design.

And the photo without flash:

In the idea of life after death and reincarnation and getting a tattoo about this thier are a few diffrent ideas you can go with one being the phoenix but as you said it is too trendy so i would go with maybe a gargoyale as they do represent what you are looking for as they are stone and dead one minute and come to life the next and kinda represents what your looking for.. Try doing a search on symbols and other things that represents what your looking for and really research this idea as im sure you have done already thier are alot of ideas you can go with..

Of course the phoenix is the obvious answer but you are right, it has been done too much. I like the suggestion for the Ankh. If you were female, I would suggest a butterfly the symbolize a life change. Again cliche but it works. Something else you may want to consider is the infinity symbol. Looks like a 8 on its side. You could stylize it to your liking. Another thing you could do is find a reputable tattoo shop and speak to one of the artists about your idea. They might be able to help you come up with something. Something totally original just for you. Keep me posted. I would like to know what you came up with.

Of course there is reincarnation, and you are deep in wanting to symbolize it. You're right, forget the phoenix, how about you meditate on your present life and the lessons that you have yet to learn and imagine what you would like to come back as. Then tattoo that as a reminder of what you want to come back as. Just a thought. Another suggestion, through medidation I know that you will see a vision of your question and you will then have your answer. good luck.

The phoenix is a good idea, but might I suggest an ankh (Egyptian symbol for eternal life) as well?

k, just kidding. i know nothing about you, so its hard to think of a tattoo for you. i say talk to a reputable artist who has a good imagination, and also keep searching online by finding things that represent afterlife and resurection etc....

I would have to advise against it. The body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. There is life after death but not the kind you are thinkling about. Reincarnation is false. It is not biblical. When you past you will not be reicarnated into another body as someone else. Jesus loves you and he died for you. Seek him and he will reveal himself to you, that you may believe in him and his words(Bible) and have eternal with Him in Heaven after this life is over. it is his promise to all who believes. Jesus says if anyone believes in him has eternal life already. It is a free gift from God. Jesus is the way to Heaven, and there is no other way. The way we live today determines our eternal destiny. God bless you
