I am talking about the Southern provinces of Pattani, Yala, and Narthiwat.
I understand back in 2004 there was a massacre committed by the Govt. which is the main reason for this violence (possibly).
General Suyrad recently visited these provinces and apologized eventhough he was not responsible. It seems like the violence is getting worse.
I think it will take forever until these provinces regain trust of the Govt. It is rumored that they may turn to be autonomous within the next 3 years.

I get the impression that General Suyrad means well but it will be a losing battle.

Also, regarding the situation I heard that Government officials are in on it (no surprise) and also that the insurrgents were trying to recruit Cambodian Muslims.
What a mess!
Again, I am interested in hearing from Thai people.
I been currently living in Thailand for the past year and a half and have visited several times previously. It is a great country and remains safe elsewhere.

The present government's policy is on the right track and the situation will be improved and got back to normal soon. It would take a little bit more time to gain trust from the people after returning justice to them by bringing the wrong doers and corrupted government officials to the court. Neigboring country like Malaysia and other Islamic countries pledge their supports to the new government policy.

The unrest in the south seems to have a foreign hand in it somewhere. Thais by nature are peace loving and this violence is not Thai way. The Muslims faction in the south had wanted autonomy from the Buddhist-majority country and is using whatever means to achieve this end. And foreign help is just fanning the violence there.

When will peace comes back, we may know the cause but will not not be able to pin-point the real instigators.

No the Islam factor will not let it go. The radicals groups only listen to them-selfs and do not care about what is right, wrong, good or correct only that they are right and if you do not agree you are evil and need to die.
The Islam factor will bring the whole world to war and they will not care as they do not care who they hurt or kill.

It is a great country, but like every country, it has problems. I think it will take a long time, but southern Thailand will be peaceful.
