I think if you have done it three times, and still not recieved anything in return, then you need to decide on if it is worth it or not.....does he appreciate the gifts...or just give them to someone else?
It really depends on why you are giving the gift, are you doing it because you feel you have to? or because you like him, and feel he deserves one for all he does for you?
Try once more, if you receive nothing this year...then dont do it anymore......

There is no reason to give your boss a gift unless your boss intends to give you one. A card has always worked best in the past with my bosses.
I usually worry about being seen as a brown noser to my boss, which is my main motivation for not giving anything more then a card. That and the boss makes more then you. If they want a gift they can go out and buy their own. :)

If you love to give gifts, I say go for it. Otherwise, I think that a nice card will be appropriate, given your last years of gift giving. As a boss, I gave gifts, but my husband did not. After we married, I bought gifts for his folks for a few years, but family life got the best of me and I failed to continue. We are certainly NOT offended by not being on the gift list and are actually relieved so we don't feel too guilty about not giving to the people who deserve it the most.

If you enjoy gift giving, then give a small gift. As he has never given anything in return, don't spend too much. A token gift like a box of chocolates or music CD would certainly be sufficient. It could be that your boss feels it may be showing inappropriate favoritism to give gifts to one underling and not to the others.

I think it is more appropriate for a boss to give to those under him, than the other way around. You are "working for" him, so he should be giving you a gift, if any gifts are given between you.
This is not a hard rule; you can give him a gift if you want, but it isn't necessary or expected.

Maybe you should not if he does not reciprocate.
Instead you can give him (and others you know) a gift that is free.

This will still send the message of gift giving, but will allow you to maybe not do anything next year if you still receive nothing in return.

In most companies it's not allowed due to the subordination/boss thing. Bake him some cookies or candy or something.

I think you should only buy your boss a gift IF YOU WANT TO. If you have no desire to do so, then don't do it. I apply this to everyone.
