My middle son really wants a dog. He has lobbied pretty well for it and is actually starting to convince me! Although I'm not a dog person, I can see my son needs a pal. The problem is, no one is at home during the day except our two cats. Is there any breed of dog that will be suited to having only cat-company during the day?

Also, I am concerned about the following obstacles: slobbering, smell, accidents, yapping, etc. Are there any breeds that are good for non-dog people like me but still fun enough for an active boy?

If you say, don't get a dog remember -- I don't have one just for these reasons. However, I am trying to get past these obstacles to make my kid happy. I know a pet is for life, so I want to make a good decision. Any insghts? Your responses are appreciated!!!!

Have you explained to him that dogs should not be left at home alone for that long of a period? If you have someone that can come in and make sure the dog has water and is let out to go to the bathroom, that would be best because leaving them alone is never a good idea. Dogs can chew when they get bored! Other than that, my consensus is always the same when it comes to families with kids and other pets. Labs or Goldens. They are the best by far for being sociable not only with kids but also with other animals. Here's some info on both breeds for you.

If you want a small breed, Pomeranians are good with older kids that know when to stop bothering the dog. But they can be barkers so you'd have to nip that in the bud at a very young age or adopt one that is already trained about barking. They tend to think they are a larger breed of dog and appear fearless at times. Here's some information on them.

Personally I don't like small dogs with kids for various reasons. Shelties are also a good choice. They are wonderful with kids and can even be protective of them. Here's their information:

Hope this helps!

We have a Miniature Pinscher. She gets along great with our cats-they sleep together. We have 6 cats. She is 12 pounds, which is about the size of a cat. She never slobbers, never smells, and thinks all the cats are her very own. MinPins are also extremely playful and energetic-perfect for a boy.

The only thing might be your son taking a tiny dog for walks-not a good idea as there are huge dogs out there.

But a MinPin, in my opinion, is a perfect dog. Great watchdog also.

My best advise is to go to a shelter and get a dog which has been tested with kids, cats and everything. Maybe you can find one that is obedience trained already. Shelter personnel (here its the Humane Society) know there dogs. the best house broke dogs I've had have come from the shelter! Lay out the concerns you have, and what you can offer, like how much exercise, etc. and they can help you find the right dog for your family.

Make sure to have your son and the dog go to obedience class, too.

I have always had dogs and cats together. I now own a pit bull and when I brought my kitten home he loved it. A puppy growing up with a cat or 2 cats should get along just fine, whatever breed you get.

None. Dogs are too needy. I told my son when he asked me for one "There will never be a dog in my house. Get one when you have your own house."Then I got him a cat. I realize you have two cats, so maybe try a rabbit or gerbil.
