I would really like the quote about the branch or tree. I think it's an ancient proverb from Asia.

the one I'm thinking about is about being flexible like a green branch or tree or else you will break like a rigid stick, or something to that effect.

probably not the one you're thinking of, but:

''a man is like an oak, tall and proud but when a strong wind blows he won't bend, but will break.
a woman is the willow, slender and flexible she sways gracefully with the wind and does not break''

The tree of knowledge bears the ripest fruit. Probably not the one your talking about, but I like it.
