Well, there is always hope for those who can see a better tommorrow for themselves-- the temporary homeless. Then there are the chronic homelesss... large percentage of these type of homeless people are mentally ill...and then there are those that are addicted to drugs, so I think some of them don't have the ability to even realize that they have hit rock bottom.
On a sidenote: I actually have an uncle who prefers to live the transient life, despite being well educated and employed (but not to his potential). He does not beg, he works and lives very simply...he likes to live without possessions, not even a home. He'll stay in the street, or at a shelter, or rent a room at some group home. I never understood, but I bet there are others like him out there, who just like to live a very humble existence.

This is not a popular opinion, but I think that some people like living that lifestyle and it doesn't bother them one bit. There are lots of people who would rather hold up a sign and panhandle than get a job. Think about it - even if just a couple people per hour give them money, that could add up to $10-15 an hour. Beats working at Wal-Mart.

Self preservation is the highest innate instinct in every human being. Just because someone isn't homeless doesn't mean their life is so great.

Some people want nothing at all. Some people have a knack for practicing 'acceptance'.
The survival instinct is what makes us go on.
