My year old is having a bad eczema flare up, raised red patches on his arms and lower legs. I have heard that I should put crisco on it?, I want to avoid using cortisone cream, and I have samples of hylira and atopiclair that I can use. I need to know what works and is very safe.

I have had really bad eczema my whole life (27 years). I found that my breakouts are less if I use perfume and dye free laundry detergent like Dreft, Arm and Hammer, or Cheer Free. Tide also makes a Free version. I've never been able to use any other body soap than Dove body soap. My dermatologist said that Ivory is very harsh. I also could not get by without the Lubriderm lotion for sensitive skin. Vanicream is also very good for eczema. I would strongly recommend washing all of your son's clothes, bedding, towels, etc in dye and perfume free detergent. Don't put Crisco on it, it won't be able to breathe. Just make sure you keep it moisturized because it is itchy.

You should avoid using cortisone or other steroids at this age. Any topical ointment will get absorbed and affect a 3-year old far more than an adult.

My daughter also had eczema when she was 3, and it gradually went away by the time she was five. Often, skin conditions at this age come and go.

You should visit a dermatologist to determine if this is really eczema and not psoriasis or dermatitis. Each of these conditions has different treatments.

Here are a few things to try. Get some sun exposure on the skin (but be very careful not to overdo this). You might also try soaking him in warm baths with some dissolved mineral salt (search the Internet for "Dead Sea Salts"). They work well on both psoriasis and eczema and are considered quite safe to use.

My little boy had eczema on his cheeks. I was not sure what method to use but I didn't want to make my boy go through any surgery treatments at this young age. Some suggested a plastic surgeon since it was in a very visible location but our family doctor recommend this natural guide.

I know what you are going through my son is 14 months old and has eczema on the back of his knees and ankles. He scratches so much that he breaks the skin and it bleeds...I've tryed the Steriod stuff my dr. reccommended it worked for a little but kept coming back...

To tell you the truth no lie, I have a friend who has the same issue with her daughter and she uses unrefined shea butter. You can buy in bulk. I used it on my son and he has not broke out in 6 months...This works wonders on him..You should try it, it's not expensive it cost less than what you would pay for medicated products..Just try it and let me know how it works.. Here's a website you can go on to read about it and where i order from there thru paypal.Good Luck

This may not help but i just heard recently on a news program that there is a new drug for eczema. You may be able to use it apparently its a breakthrough drug. Ask your skin specialist or doctor, the pharmacist may know.
